St Rumbold’s Cathedral, a 13th century Gothic masterpiece, dominates the old city of Mechelen. ARTER got commissioned for the complete interior restoration. Since 2007, we’ve coordinated several preliminary studies to assess the structural condition of walls and roofs, to evaluate the performance of the technical installations and to analyze the climate and deteriorations in the interior. Combined with archaeological excavations and historical research, this resulted in a phased approach in which the architecture and its valuable pieces of art have been completely restored.
In the meanwhile, ARTER coordinated several urgent interventions. This includes conservational treatments of wooden sculptures and paintings and the structural reinforcement of several floors in the choir. Currently, ARTER is managing several projects in the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament.
