SINT-PIETERS & PAULUS
OBLECT INTERIOR RESTORATION
LOCATION VEEMARKT – 2800 MECHELEN
PHASE REALIZED
CLIENT STAD MECHELEN
The church of St Peter and Paul in Mechelen is the last remaining relict of an impressive 17th century convent founded by the Jesuits. Due to the extremely complete state of preservation of the interior, containing almost all of the authentic woodwork and paintings at their original position, the interior still has its original appearance.
Since its appointment in 2004, ARTER coordinates the complete interior restoration of which the first four stages have already been finished. During a two-year long campaign in which several previously unknown decorations were discovered, the church regained its original allure. These valuable newly discovered aspects, such as a unique gilded textile sealing, several painted trompe l’oeils and religious latin sayings, have been integrated as much as possible. In the next few phases, the woodwork, fine wood sculptures and marble altars will be restored.
