SERRE JOURDAIN
OBJECT RENOVATION OF A GREENHOUSE
LOCATION KASTEELWEG 4 - 1950 KRAAINEM
SURFACE 110 m²
CLIENT MUNICIPALITY OF KRAAINEM
PARTNERS DC Bouw – General Contractor
This project concerns the renovation of the greenhouse adjoining Kasteel Jourdain. The greenhouse consists of two distinct parts: an original historic section located beneath the castle’s entrance portico, and a later-added extension constructed in polycarbonate, which had fallen into a poor state of repair.
The historic section was carefully restored, including the replacement of all glazing, full repainting, and thorough cleaning, preserving its architectural character and integrity.
The non-historic extension was dismantled and replaced with a new glass structure that visually and materially aligns much more harmoniously with the historic greenhouse. This intervention restores coherence to the overall composition while improving durability and aesthetics.
Inside, the space was finished with a continuous new flooring in terracotta-look tiles, creating a warm and unified atmosphere. Integrated planters were added to reinforce the greenhouse character and enhance the spatial experience.
The renovated greenhouse will serve as a multipurpose space managed by the municipality of Kraainem. A small bar was incorporated to support future uses, and particular attention was given to accessibility, ensuring the space is welcoming and usable for a wide range of visitors.
