Project Octopus concerns the demolition of an existing house and dilapidated rear annexes, followed by the construction of a new municipal building in the town center of Kraainem.

The new building brings together public services, community functions, and temporary housing within a single compact development. On the ground floor, two flexible multipurpose spaces with an integrated bar area can be used separately or combined through movable partition walls. These spaces open onto a generous terrace overlooking the surrounding green environment. A semi-industrial kitchen supports both the multipurpose spaces and cooking workshops. These spaces are also available for activities organized by the municipality’s social welfare service (OCMW/CPAS), ensuring their use for both community events and social service initiatives. In addition, the ground floor includes care-related facilities, two office spaces, and sanitary areas, and is dedicated to the municipality’s social welfare services.

The two upper floors accommodate eight apartments, ranging from one to three bedrooms, designed for temporary and emergency housing. Technical installations are located in the attic space beneath the pitched roof.

The building is conceived as a fossil-free development, with energy supplied through geothermal boreholes, ensuring a sustainable and energy-efficient operation.

Project Octopus aims to create a flexible and welcoming community hub that strengthens local social services while providing high-quality temporary housing in the heart of the municipality.
