Through a competition organised by the ‘Vlaamse Overheid’, ÁRTER designed an extension for the Brussels language school of the ‘Huis van het Nederlands vzw’.
A clearly defined program was established: office spaces on the ground floor and a total of 7 classrooms on the remaining 4 levels. The existing buildings made place for the extension, carefully connected to the school’s main building by a circular exterior space defining the architecture and organisation with a sp(e)/(a)cial dynamism.
An important challenge was the presence of a day-care centre for children using the same exterior space and elevator, which provided the inspiration for a vivid & colourful back façade in return. The same logic was used for the main façade, using curved coloured concrete panels inside a rigid concrete frame.
The neutral aspect of the non-decorated interior concrete blocks is countered by the acoustic panels & doors, identifying each floor by another bright colour.
