OBJECT EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR RESTORATION
LOCATION GROTE MARKT – 3000 LEUVEN
CLIENT STAD LEUVEN
In 1998, ARTER got appointed to carry out the design and coordination of the interior and exterior restoration of the Gothic church of St. Peters. As the main church in the centre of Louvain, it is an important religious and cultural landmark. ARTER proposed a long-time planning and strategy in which the exterior restoration (2003-2011) was handled first.
Throughout several strategically planned phases by which the church could constantly stay open, the interior has been fully restored and the technical installations have been optimised to the current standard. In this overall approach, architectural elements as well as precious cultural en devotional objects were restored carefully. Currently, the restoration has reached the final phases. The current campaign focuses on the architecture of the nave and southern aisles, in which the magnificent mural paintings on walls and ceilings are being fully restored.
In the final phases, new access points will improve the accessibility of the church and optimize the museum inside the church.
