PHASE REALIZED

CLIENT CITY OF BRUSSELS

The Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg (Royal Flemish Theatre), built in an innovative Flemish Neo-Renaissance style, was designed by Jean BAES (1848-1914) in 1883-87 and interiorly decorated by both Jean and Henri BAES. The building was listed as a monument in 1993.

Among its main features should be noted the historic rear façade (being integrated in the Baes project), the facade balconies in wrought and cast iron and concrete, and the lavishly decorated interiors. The building was heavily damaged by fire in 1955.

Restoration and renovation work by ARTER was begun in 2002 and completed by 2006. The project included the analysis and re-establishment of its historic interior decoration, as well as the restoration of facades and roofs, including roof trusses, balconies and window and door joinery. The building of a new cultural centre (KVS BOX & Café Congo) facing quai aux Pierres de Taille / Arduinkaai was designed by A2RC.
